You know that song “Our Lips Are Sealed” by The Go-Gos? Well I feel like that song fits in very well with the theme of this post from http://zaftigzeitgeist.wordpress.com/. I found this article very interesting and encourage you to check it out.

PS I only included LL because I think he is hot–this article isn’t related to him at all, unfortunately.

Today is the first day of my last term of college, and also a Monday, so it’s measurement time. Not too much has changed since last week…

Friendly Fire

March 25, 2010

I woke up feeling pretty awful this morning–sick to my stomach and freezing cold. I’m pretty sure that this is a result of some unrelated to dieting stresses I am experiencing in my life at the moment, but it has me in a pretty unmotivated mood. Funny enough, this is a great mood to be in to discuss a dieting phenomena I have deemed “friendly fire”.

Borrowed from the military term Friendly Fire in dieting is a similar idea: friends accidentally shooting your motivation down… Read the rest of this entry »

Mental Budgeting

The Economist in me loved this post on Psychology Today’s site. Ph.D Art Markmen outlines how to develop self-control by keeping a mental budget of what you “allow” yourself to have per diem and how to be realistic about it. Definitely a post worth checking out!

Thinner Face

It’s currently Spring Break for this college student–my last Spring Break ever I suppose. I graduate in 11.5 weeks and don’t really know what I’m going to do with myself yet. Anyway, since all I’ve been up to is work this week, I’ve been spending a lot of time (read: too much time) on the internet and Facebook.com in particular. This sudden awareness of my internet presence has sparked me to change my Fb profile picture to something more current: the photo I have in this post (I’m the non-robot one).

This is the first picture I’ve put up on Facebook since I’ve been actively dieting where people actually noticed how thin my face is getting. It’s a lovely feeling, but also odd that people are almost scared to bring it up. No one has commented on the photo online. Instead I get sheepish text messages complimenting my progress. I wish losing weight wasn’t so taboo.

I used Google Maps to track my walking yesterday and it was over 6.5 miles. It’s crazy how in-shape I am getting–I used to get winded walking a few blocks. Anyway, I’ve got some rowing to do, as the great James Blunt has said: goodbye my lover.

Drunk Dieting

As a fellow dieter, or perhaps simply an interested party, you’re probably well aware that drinking alcohol is not exactly helpful to weight loss. I find this particularly hard as an of-age college student. My social life revolves around booze–parties, clubs, bars, etc. Before I changed my eating habits I was drinking 3 or 4 nights a week. I wasn’t getting drunk every time, but because my tolerance was so high, I was throwing back around 3 drinks a night. That’s an average of 12 drinks a week at the least!

Self-Esteem = Motivation

March 23, 2010

Personally, when trying to lose weight the most difficult thing is not seeing results as quickly as I hope to. You feel like you’re busting your ass and not eating foods you like and you still are the same ol’ you. This feeling, if you let it get to you, can put a serious dent in your motivation.

There is a strong connection between self-esteem and how self-motivated you will be about losing weight. This is why I suggest boosting your self-esteem in other ways to stay on the right track. Read the rest of this entry »
