Measurement Monday

April 30, 2012

Aside from my thigh, and barely my calf (baaaaarely), I am back down to the lowest measurements I’ve ever taken. This week Andy McBee has vacation time, and we spent the weekend together–which hasn’t happened in months (maybe over a year). I wasn’t totally lazy, and made it to workout three times, but not as hard as I usually would.

Tonight there will be running (cause I can’t forget I’m 5 days out from my next 5k) and then heading to the gym for a lil’ StepMill action and some sauna. I have my next official update with Lyndsi tomorrow so I’ll know what I’m weighing in at and what my body fat percentage is very soon. 32% and under for women my age is healthy, and I was just above that two weeks ago, so hopefully I’m in a healthy range now–can’t wait to see!

I Wanna Get Dirty

April 26, 2012

PhotobucketToday’s post title is inspired by this song. I’m willing to bet everyone that reads my blog already knew that.

People that know me in real life know that I am girly. I’ve never been camping. I own a giant box of makeup which I use daily. I don’t even like having my hair up in a ponytail or bun unless I’m working out. Which is why it may be a surprise to everyone that I’m thinking about training for a Spartan Race. There’s a race sort of like this happening in Eugene called The Dirty Dash, which I plan to register for when I get paid, but ultimately, I’d like to travel to and run the real deal.

Something about training to be extremely animalistic and get super filthy while climbing over obstacles and sprinting in the mud makes me willing to leave my flowery smelling comfort-zone (temporarily) and get dirrrrty. I’ll post again as the time approaches–but stay tuned for photos of a very muddy girl come July. Also, if anyone is in the area and wants to run the Dirty Dash together–it’s 4 miles total, up at Mt. Pisgah, with several obstacles in between. What’s more fun than getting dirty together??

PhotobucketI’m not the Rock, unfortunately, but I do have something cooking in the kitchen that you should smell: my body.

Yes, this sounds cannibalistic and perverse, but that’s how I like to keep things around here. In all seriousness, there is a saying “Abs are made in the kitchen,” but this is really true of all body parts–your diet means more than any other part of your fitness routine. You can workout everyday, but if you’re eating crap* you’re not going to see results.

Since a few people have asked about my meal plan for the week, I figured I’d go ahead and post what I’m eating (for the next 7 days), here:

  • Meal #1: Protein pancake with sugar free jam (245 cals)
  • Meal #2: 4 ounces grilled chicken breast, 2 cups spinach (138 cals)
  • Meal #3: 3 hard-boiled egg whites, 4 celery stalks (102 cals)
  • Meal #4: 2 tablespoons crunchy natural peanut butter (210 cals)
  • Meal #5: 4 ounces grilled chicken breast, 2 cups spinach (138 cals)
  • Meal #6: 6 ounces tilapia, 2 cups romaine, 2 tablespoons yellow mustard, one baked onion (318 cals)

Total calorie intake: 1151.

I will note that there should be a run before meal one, and there is a workout between meals #4/5 and #6. I am using the peanut butter as quick energy before I hit the gym, and having a larger meal when I get home. Perhaps this isn’t what The Rock is cooking, but I bet as a body builder his diet is just a more calorie heavy version of something like this.

*I just wanted to bring some new crap food to everyone’s attention: Ben & Jerry’s frozen Greek yogurt. Not gonna lie, I’ve had the blueberry flavor and it was yummy, but this stuff isn’t Greek yogurt. It contains Greek yogurt, and additional milk and CORN SYRUP. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is healthy. If you want to try it stop by a Ben & Jerry’s scoop shop and try a single serving. Save yourself from the at-home pint. It is delicious, though.

Measurement Monday

April 23, 2012

Measurements are mostly the same. My thigh is back down an inch (where I was two weeks ago). My waist is measuring the same, but my body is looking firmer, so I guess I’ll take it. Definitely did better this last week with staying focused on my diet and getting lots of cardio. However, I skipped Zumba and took yesterday as a rest day and feel pretty lazy because of it. Plan to work extra hard in the gym tonight to make it up. Only two weeks until my next 5k, so I predict there will be plenty of running this week too. Happy Monday!

Recipe: Protein Pancake

April 20, 2012

PhotobucketAs I posted earlier this week, my diet has taken on some new restrictions. So far I’m really enjoying my daily meal plan. Yes, I’m eating the same things every single day, but I feel like I’m eating all day long, and I’m only intaking 1200 calories!

For breakfast every morning I’ve been having a protein pancake. This is really good after a run (which is usually when I’m eating it) because it has both protein and carbs). And, it’s REEEEALLY easy to make:

  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 3 egg whites
  • Cinnamon (to taste)
  • Cooking spray (olive or coconut oil is best)

Combine egg and oats in a bowl and season with cinnamon. Spray your frying pan and heat to medium. Once your pan is warm dump in your oat mixture and allow it to set up. Flip once and cook until all of the egg has solidified.

You can eat this with sugar-free syrup, sugar-free jam, or some sort of nut butter (but this takes away from fat allowances later in the day). I honestly thought this sounded really gross before I tried it, but I like ’em without any sort of topping at all. And, the whole recipe is only 225 calories.

PhotobucketIf you live in the Eugene area there will be a special Zumba class this Sunday at InShape on 26th and Willamette (across from Turtles).

This class features three instructors (one if which is my fave: Teresa), who will each get a 30 minute set–so 90 minutes of Zumba!

Festivities kick off at 1pm, and I will be there getting my sweat on. This is a fundraiser with the proceeds going to The Kumari Project. Minimum suggested donation is $10, I hope to see you there!

Andy and Me, Cinco de Mayo 2007

Cinco de Mayo is often called “Cinco de Drinko” among college students and post-college aged people like myself. Since drinking doesn’t really fit in with my weightloss and fitness goals (despite knowing this I still mess up), I’m always looking for alternative sober activities.

This year I plan on running the Cinco de Mayo 5k to benefit Centro Latino Americano. The plan here is two-fold: first, I really want to work on getting my mile time down and this gives me a couple weeks to train before having a timed event. And, two, it’ll keep me from drinking to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

Plus, I’ll still have an occasion to wear my “Cerveza Por Favor” t-shirt–which I only wear once a year on this day.

If you live in the Eugene, Oregon area and are interested in running the race with me, registration is $20 and the entry form can be found here.

Edited to add: I’ll post a before and after of me in that shirt come race day. Wow how things have changed!
