Hello blog world, my name is Michelle and I am 25 years old. I have been overweight for as long as I can remember and I am finally taking control of my health and fitness.

It is important to note that I have been deemed “healthy” by my doctor despite my weight and do not experience insulin resistance, thyroid issues, blood sugar or pressure issues or well… anything else worth mentioning. This blog is not in any way a health plan I am recommending to anyone else, but simply an account of what I am doing to lose weight.

I started this blog because there seems to be a lack of blogs by people my age that are serious about losing 100+ lbs.

If you’re interested in more about me personally, what I eat, do for exercise and why I am trying to lose weight, feel free to read on. Otherwise, thanks for stopping by!

I have been on my current diet and exercise plan since right after Thanksgiving 2009. It was probably the worst time to start a diet because of all the holiday parties that follow T-Day, but I just woke up feeling really bloated and unhappy and found that most of my pants were growing more and more uncomfortable with each passing day.

Flag Day! June 14th, 2011

In September 2009, I tipped the scales at 283 lbs and I am only 5’2! I wore size 24 pants and XXL dresses and shirts. As of May 1st, 2012 I weigh 197 lbs. As of October 14th, 2011 I am wearing size 12 pants and M dresses and S shirts.

I have achieved these results by loosely following a low-carb diet which includes a lot of tuna, chicken, eggs, broccoli, salad, the occasional soy or rice cake and cheese (probably more cheese than it should). I allow myself to “cheat” with bananas or strawberries with cream when I am feeling especially bad.

I also practice intermittent fasting, which I learned about over at Fitness Spotlight. I noticed that on days where I was too busy to eat until the evening (during midterms, finals, moving etc.) I would feel surprisingly good and continue to see results for a few days following. Generally I choose to fast from bed until around 5-6pm the following evening 2 or 3 times a week.

Lastly, I’m uncoordinated, not an athlete and not very good with exercise. I was one of those kids that developed skills in almost everything except the athletic. The main ways I exercise are long walks–it’s about a 1.2 miles from my house to work and I walk to work and back Monday-Friday. I also have a few friends I walk with for 3-6 mile walks 3 or 4 times a week. Recently (April 2011) I actually started running because walking was not providing the challenge I was looking for in my routine. I generally go for 5 to 10-mile workouts, about half of which I run. I purchased an old Precor rowing machine (circa 1983) off Craigslist and when the weather is bad I row for 40 minutes while I watch tv. I believe exercise is important, but I will probably never be one of those people who works out so much they can eat anything they want and maintain their weight. It’s nice to meet you blog world, you’re beautiful and majestic and I hope we become good friends.
